Made from Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life by Jenna Woginrich is an entertaining glimpse into the life of a self sufficient woman. In 180 pages she breaks down major points of self sufficiency (raising chickens, gardening, beekeeping, sewing, rabbits, etc.) into dedicated chapters then breaks it down even further into subcategories. I loved the format of this book as it allowed for skipping around to read in the order I wanted.
She writes in a light hearted sometimes comical tone which makes for an enjoyable read. She shares her love for mushing, her relocation, and all of her struggles and triumphs along the way.
You’ll finish this book with a boost of motivation and bit more inspiration.
She reiterates the importance of taking small steps. The idea of a self sufficient homestead seems out of reach for some but it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing endeavor. Do what you can, start small, stick with it, and don’t let failures deter you.
Good book with basic info, fast read, but don’t expect this book to be a resource. She has, however, included about 10 pages of outside resources which was a thoughtful addition. Some are books but most are websites and will likely fill any spare time with loads of additional info.
